Mexican candy shootout!

Leo | April 1, 2008

Mexican candy shootout group shot - Wow! we bought *a lot* of candy!A couple of weeks ago Catherine and I paid a visit to Dulceria Fiesta. You’re going to have to wait a little bit for our profile of this wonderful little Mexican candy store on Calhoun Street but while we were there we bought a giant bag of candy that we’ve been bravely working through all this time. And why would we subject ourselves to such a grueling regimen? Why, it’s all for you, dear reader so that you too can be prepared to sample the strange world of Mexican candy.

While the rest of the world gets by with boring old milk chocolate, caramel, nougat, berry flavors and gummi (soon to be listed as a new element on the periodic table my scientist friends tell me), Mexican candy dares to be different. When you enter a Mexican candy store, you enter a world where tamarind, mango, coconut, chili, and tabasco rule. Yes, you will find chocolate too but you might not recognize it as such. In fact, there will be plenty of unrecognizable ingredients. But that’s OK, because if you’re bold you’ll discover a whole new range of tastes that will be well worth traveling outside your comfort zone.

So follow along with us for the next few days for our Mexican Candy Shootout!

where the heck can I get these Mexican Candies in Australia?? They look great. However, if you ever want to taste a REAL mango for dessert, try a Bowen mango-there is nothing like it on the earth.

Heh! Some of them take getting used to, but after a while you really get to like the whole tamarind and mango thing. We’ll have to see if we can find a Bowen mango locally. Thanks for the tip!

I was raised by Mexican culture in Orange County, California.  So I can tell you that my white friends from the midwest would make the funniest face watching me eat the most delicious candy in the world.  Mexican candy is something even adults can enjoy because it mixes daring flavors with sugar.  I’ve dated m fair share of whole-some all americans and let me tell you that all of them have been left with the Mexican taste buds for this sort of candy.  One in particular who lives in Washington still asks for me to ship Pico Pelones.  Now if you are REALLY a Mexican candy eater you’ll go even farther and dare to MIX some of the products.  I recommend Pico Pelon with Lucas Acidito or Lorena Pico Sitos.  Also the Bagabond lollipos with seasoning are so good.  Yummmmay!
